Flashlight vs Weapon Light: Home Defense Drill!

A fun drill but we test an important and serious home defense choice for you: how to best illuminate the night and use your gun when an intruder threatens your life. Is it best to hand hold a light separate from your home defense gun OR integrate a weapon on it? We are told here’s lots of internet noise on the subject so TNPrs have asked us to perhaps clear it up a bit. This is not a scientific test but some conclusions are easily drawn, as before.. We test both lighting concepts in this drill with TacticalDoodle and Mike Jardine, a cool TNPr who’s helped us before. Gun of choice is the excellent, high value Canik 55 TP9 SA (www.jgsales.com), handheld flashlight is a FourSevens Maelstrom (reviewed, rec’d), and pistol light is the Streamlight TLR-4 with laser (not sighted in for this pistol btw). We “go to sleep” and are awakened to make a fast five shot string of fire against a 12 yard target using both methods. I make this drill fun but joking aside, we kick some butt on that steel IPSC target. Both systems can work but one is clearly superior, no surprise to us. We found this out decades ago in our own shooting and training. Does the penguin live or die? Is the offhand flashlight technique as awesome as some internet commandos claim? We find out and let you know.

A quote by Jeff Cooper, “Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.”
